Muddy Waters, 1989

Fred Woodward called and ask if I knew about Muddy Waters. I only knew that trout hit better in clear waters, but what the hell. “No, I knew nothing about Muddy Waters” If it wasn’t Willie or Waylon, I probably didn’t know much about it. They sent me a music review case set of Muddy’s Blues LPs. It was a fun drawing to do and we were both happy with it.

A satire that takes place in the year 2081. Everyone is now equal. If you excelled in any area you were physically handicapped. So, all the stuff I added to our modern man, who has a slight resemblance to Frankenstein, was to lower him to everyone else’s abilities and expectations. He rebelled and was captured by the H-G men. I chose to show him as he was getting his mug shot.

Pretty much a straight-on portrait, but I wanted to kick it up a notch. So, I added the little bandits and hearts. I needed to fill some more space, so I put in the title of the CD. Then I started thinking about a border and I fiddled with the optics of it…..another way to pass the day playing. It was time to call Fed Ex. Thanks to all the people here and many more not mentioned in this article for the opportunity to work on your projects……It’s really been a fun ride and it’s not over.

“The court jester provides a key to unlocking deeper social truths…..” As Daniel was telling me the direction of the article this vision immediately appeared. I couldn’t wait to do the job. The jester tying his tie, the corporate symbol was it. Along with the possibility of putting in offbeat stuff, funky birds and monkeys (the monkeys reference was left over from a project for the Bronx Zoo). A fellow illustrator posed for the reference. Thank goodness he understood the “business”……He did look kinda cute though.

“Tolkien on the exterior is a very conservative guy. A professor at Oxford, who invented the most bizarre world for us to view. His inner vision spills out onto the countryside he has created. I didn’t think this up all on my own! The illustration you see came after a conversation with the writer at Entertainment Weekly. Tolkien’s world is very much like ours as illustrators. We are kings and create our visions to meet the situations required. What fun!”
Singing Frog, 2001

“Papa, that’s not the Budweiser frog!” Grandkids are quite perspective. This frog is a bit more sophisticated, so to speak, but he is still bellowing at night on a lily pad with the appropriate bugs accompanying him. Dellas Graphics does a calendar each year and the only requirement is to do a frog…..which I did.
